Access control: A system that allows you to control who may enter an area Click here for more info
Active relocking device: A type of lock that automatically locks each time you close the door.
Auxiliary Lock: A secondary lock i.e. adding a deadbolt in addition to a doorknob lock or vice versa.
Back plate: a thin metal plate that sits behind certain lock’s cylinder attaching it to the door.
Biometric lock: Using fingerprint scanning technology to control access.
Bitting – part of a key that activates lock, also known as key code.
Bolt: Part of lock extending from the door to door frame to secure door.
Buzzer: See access control.

CAM – Part of lock that is rotate by turning the key – allows locking and unlocking.
Cam Lock: Commonly used lock for file cabinets, mail boxes etc
CCTV – Closed Circuit Television: System of video cameras hooked to a security monitor or recording device.
Chain lock: Chain links use to secure a door using a slide plate or key.
Chamber: Area in the lock that contains tumbles
Combination lock: Lock requiring a specific number code to be opened.
Cylinder: The entire lock mechanism also known as core
Deadbolt: Type of lock that works using a bolt, requires deliberate unlocking and locking.
Decorative hardware: Locks and knobs designed for utility and aesthetics.
Drop bolt: A lock system that works by dropping a long pin or bolt into a hole.

Electronic Locks: Type of lock activated by electric currents can be part of access control system.
Eviction: Legal eviction requires a locksmith to replace existing locks.
EMK: Emergency master key.
ENG: Engineer key.

HKP: Housekeeper’s key
Housing: Part of lock holding the lock mechanism (core or cylinder).
