The vat system was introduced by General Motors in 1986 to prevent theft of certain models (see list below).
After GM introduced the VATS it drastically reduced the theft of GM vehicle outfitted with this system.
The VAT system protects the vehicle by reading one of the 15 resistors value otherwise the vehicle cannot be started.
Use the wrong value and the car will be in no crank situation for approximately 10 minutes. This is a list of GM vehicles equipped with VATS – Does not refer to all years.
